Welcome Gino: The First “48 Hours” and What Happened Next…
Arriving home, no problem in the car—just went to sleep. Walked him around the garden so he could see the boundaries and have a chance to cock his leg. Time to explore the house and investigate a choice of beds. Initially preferred a folded-over quilt but now favours a donut bed in our bedroom corner.
Showed him the water dish and fed him at what will be his regular time.
Scary moments: TV (not a fan of tennis or football). Worried he might not support our team! Met a horse and rider on a morning walk—terrified—so glad the collar was on tight.
Threw a toy to play with—scary. Eats his meals and treats. Reacts to his name. Sleeps all night. No accidents (fingers crossed). While we’ve been busy in the garden, he wanders out but is keen to go back in. It’s one big learning curve, but we know it’s just time and patience.
One week on: Gino is settling in—retirement is good. Now loves the camper van and exploring new places. More from Gino in the next newsletter.
Fascinating Fact:
During the Middle Ages, greyhounds nearly became extinct due to famine and disease. Priests and clergymen took special care to protect the greyhounds and later bred them for noblemen. Greyhounds were beloved for their elegance and made frequent appearances in royal courts.
We Need Your Help!
Our beautiful Ellie is still with us after 12 months in kennels. Could you be that special person to offer Ellie a chance of a new life? This happy, friendly girl just loves everyone. She is nearly 6 years old, learning about other breeds, coming on a treat, and is so ready for her own home.
She’s just ready to give you all her love.

I want to let you know what events have been happening this year at NGR (or Greyhound Central, as I affectionately call it).
Let’s start with the NGR Extravaganza at Druridge Bay—the weather was fantastic, lots of greyhounds came and enjoyed walking around the lake, the yummy sausage catch, and of course, the “fun” agility course. I even won a rosette! This event is now a firm favourite in the greyhound calendar.
NGR also gave a talk about everything to do with greyhounds at Hexham WI—the supper afterwards was scrummy. Many thanks to all who support these events; it is really appreciated.
We met our fantastic school therapy dog, Duke. He is amazing, helping lots of young people and always ready for a cuddle. He is a real star and helped to quality-check donations from students for our kennel dogs.
The Cramlington Meet and Greet saw greyhounds—including some kennel dogs—come together to highlight greyhounds as great family pets. What a busy time with lots of friends, old and new, coming to say hello. My sister Inky met one of her best friends, Inky the Metro hound—tails never stopped wagging! Lots of fun with a fantastic tombola, lucky dip, and colouring in greyhound pictures.
We still have lots to look forward to…
- Whalton Village Show – 21 September: NGR stand
- Great Global Greyhound Walk and Show at Hexham – 29 September
- Special Santa Paws Walk
